Huge submarines measuring over 100 meters in length which carry a crew of more than 100 people and are in service in the main armies of the world.

These are the 10 longest submarines in the world.

1. Akula

It is a nuclear-powered submarine that was manufactured in the Soviet Union from 1982.

It measures 362 feet in length by 45 of beam and 32 of draft. It can reach a maximum speed of 20 knots on the surface and 35 in immersion. It can dive to a depth of 1,800 feet and has space for more than 70 crew.

In total 15 units of three variants were manufactured and many of them are still in service in Russia and India.

2. Virginia

It is a highly advanced class of American submarine that entered service in 2004.

It measures 377 feet in length by 34 of beam and 29 of draft. It can reach a speed of 25 knots and dive deeper than 800 feet. Its autonomy is unlimited and it has space for 135 crew.

A total of 18 units have been manufactured that are still in service in the United States Navy.

3. Jin

It is a nuclear submarine that was developed for the Chinese People’s Liberation Army Navy.

It measures 442 feet in length by 41 feet of beam. It entered service in 2008 and information on its development is kept secret. It can reach a speed greater than 20 knots and has room for 120 crew.

In total at least six units have been manufactured which have been used to patrol the South China Sea.

4. Le Triomphant

It is a new generation French submarine that entered service in 1997.

It measures 453 feet in length by 40 one beam and 34 draft. It can reach a speed of 25 knots and dive to a depth of 1,300 feet.

It has space for more than 100 crew and a total of 4 units have been manufactured that are in service in the French Navy.

It is a fourth-generation Russian multi-purpose submarine that entered service in 2010.

It is a Russian submarine that entered service in 1980 and was designed to be used against aircraft carriers.

It measures 508 feet in length by 59 of beam and 29 of draft. It can reach a speed of 15 knots on the surface or 32 in immersion. It has space for 120 crew and can dive to a maximum depth of 1960 feet.

In total 14 units have been manufactured and eight are currently in service in the Russian Navy.

8. Ohio

It is a class of American nuclear submarines that entered service in 1981. They were designed to perform deterrent patrol missions and can be submerged 780 feet deep.

It measures 560 feet in length by 42 and beam and 35 and draft. It can reach a speed greater than 20 knots and has space for more than 150 crew.

In total 18 units have been manufactured and are in service in the United States Navy.

Represents the 4th generation of strategic submarines of the Russian Navy and entered service in 2019.

It measures 557 feet in length by 44 of beam and 32 of draft. It can reach a speed of 15 knots on the surface or 29 knots an immersion and dive to a depth of fourteen hundred seventy feet. It can move silently and undetected and has space for more than 100 crew.

In total more than 4 units have been manufactured and it is one of the most advanced submarines in the world.

10. Typhoon

It is the largest submarine ever built and entered service in 1981 in the Russian Navy.

It measures 574 feet in length by 75 of beam and 39 of draft. It can reach a speed of 22 knots on the surface and 27 in immersion. It has space for 160 crew members who can comfortably live inside when submerged for months. It can be submerged to a depth of 1,300 feet and its width is due to the fact that it has multiple pressure hulls.

In total six units have been manufactured and only one is currently in service.
